Yes! Arizona Medicaid—known as AHCCCS—covers eligible doula services for pregnant and postpartum members.
How much may an Arizona doula be reimbursed?
Under the current AHCCCS fee-for-service schedule:
💰 Labor and birth support: $781.32 per diem
💰 Other covered doula support: $16.28 per 15 minutes, generally up to two hours
💰 Potential standard reimbursement: Up to approximately $911.56 per client
For example, supporting four eligible Medicaid clients in one month could generate approximately $3,646 in gross reimbursement before expenses. Additional medically necessary services may be covered with prior authorization.
What must a doula do to serve AHCCCS members?
Arizona doulas generally need to:
✅ Complete eligible doula education or hold qualifying certification
✅ Obtain voluntary state certification through the Arizona Department of Health Services
✅ Complete the birth-experience requirements for their pathway, when applicable
✅ Complete required first aid, adult CPR and neonatal resuscitation training
✅ Obtain a valid fingerprint clearance card
✅ Register as an AHCCCS provider
✅ Obtain the required recommendation or referral for the client
✅ Credential and contract with the client’s AHCCCS health plan, when applicable
✅ Maintain compliant documentation and submit claims using the approved billing codes
